Motor City Comic Con!

If you are in the Detroit area this weekend, make sure you stop by the Motor City Comic Con. I will be at table 2053 with my good friend Mike Roll. I will be doing sketches and selling books and maybe even complaining a bit about the prices of the cherry slushies. I will be at MCCC on Friday May 13th through Sunday May 15th. I am leaving slightly early on Friday (around 3 o’clock) so catch me early if you can! (That last statement was not a challenge. Or was it?)

Des and his Dad

Here is a little sneak peek at a Desmond project I am working on. It is a little developmental sketch of Desmond and his father. Desmond’s father won’t pop up much in the continuity on this site, however, I will get a few more sketches up in the near future.

A have debated about doing the entire project in fine point sharpie, since all of my developmental sketches have been done in sharpie, and I like the way they look at the moment. However, I am going to stick with my trusty old Sable #2 brush. Nothing beats a good line.

Hope you enjoy the sketch! I’ll keep you posted!

S.P.A.C.E. 2011

It has been a while since I have updated this side of the website, so this is long overdue. The year is only three months old, and I have already attended three shows!

The MSU Comics Forum was an awesome show put together by Ryan Claytor and Jay Jacot. I got to hang out with many cool artists including Guy Davis and Jay Fosgitt (to name just a few). I also managed to avoid Denver Brubaker all day, for which I think we deserve some type of trophy considering the size of the gallery the artist alley was displayed in. I had a great time doing the panel discussion with keynote speaker Nate Powell and amazing artist Jeremy Bastian. I met a ton of great people, and I am very excited for next year’s forum.

Kids Read Comics: Extravaganza is not only a fun word to spell, but it was the first time a KRC was attempted at the Ann Arbor Art Center. This show promotes the joy and excitement of reading comics to kids of all ages. Featured at this event were artists Denver Brubaker (I could only avoid him so many times) Chad Sell, Matt Feazell, Jannie Ho and Katie Cook just to name a few. I did a Messed Up Fairy Tales workshop and drew a bunch of little free sketches for the kiddes. The main KRC is happening on June 18-19 in Chelsea, MI. Do not miss this event. It is free to the public, and features a bunch of very talented artists.

S.P.A.C.E. is always a inspiring show to attend, mainly because it is choc-full of awesome artists. Bob Corby does an amazing job of keeping his guests happy, and this show did not disappoint. I had the distinct pleasure of sitting next to my friend Morgan Eagleton, who had a killer display of crazy little creatures. I also revealed version 1.0 of the “Desmond tower”. My display is not fully realized yet, but it is getting there.

I also had the opportunity to be part of the The Webcomics Review! panel which also featured webcomics creators Alex HeberlingChad SellDenver Brubaker (we’ve agreed to become eachother’s stalkers), Mike Carroll, and Richard Errington. We discussed our thoughts on the current climate of webcomics, new technologies, and all the hard-learned lessons we’ve experienced along the way. Oh, and there was an awkward moment about someone touching Richard… but let’s not dwell on that. You can view the entire panel in this video.

Finally the best part of SPACE was the fact that it was being held in the same hotel as the OHIO BEEF EXPO! Oh yes, if Stan Lee were here, you’d know what he would say… NUFF’ SAID!

X-23 vs Salmonella

Here is a drawing I did for DSD a few Thursdays ago. The “game” was to draw a randomly chosen character fighting some random chosen villains. The character that was chosen was X-23 and her foes could be either: a Platypus, and Ice Cream Sandwich, a Mummy or Salmonella. Of course I chose salmonella.

I had fun with this piece, and I think I may put some simple color into this one. We’ll see how much time I have. I have a great many projects to complete and a few conventions I need to prepare for! Hmm… maybe I won’t put color into this one.
